Olympus Demonstrates Sedationless Transnasal Endoscopy at DDW

SAN DIEGO -- Olympus opened Digestive Disease Week 2008, May 17-22, with a live demonstration of sedationless transnasal endoscopy. In addition, Olympus is presenting a broad range of innovative GI products and services, including the world’s first and only endoscope platform featuring high-definition television (HDTV) and Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) technologies.

Sedationless transnasal endoscopy, a method for evaluating the digestive tract by inserting a slim endoscope through the patient's nose, allows for a complete upper endoscopy without the costs associated with anesthesia or conscious sedation. In a recent study, 71 percent of patients said they would choose sedationless transnasal endoscopy over conventional endoscopy. Olympus’ GIF-N180 Slimsight video gastroscope, used in the DDW demonstration, is the world’s first ever to break the 5mm barrier. Designed with a super-slim 4.9 diameter, the GIF-N180 delivers superb image quality inside the upper GI tract. "We are excited to present Olympus’ latest revolutionary solutions designed to enhance observation, efficiency and functionality in endoscopy," stated Rick Harbuck, group vice president of Olympus America Medical Systems Group. "The continued growth of our portfolio of innovative products and services, coupled with our strong commitment to provide our customers with total GI solutions across the continuum of care, enables us to maintain and strengthen our leading position in this field."

Other key Olympus products, services and innovations featured at DDW 2008 include the novel Olympus Electrosurgical Generator and a broadened EndoTherapy product line; EnteroPro small bowel solution; the introduction of an EUS processor; the world’s first comprehensive networked archival and data management solution for visible light video; a Web-based clinical information management system; comprehensive consulting services; customized financial solutions and Olympus service and repair.

Breakthrough EndoTherapy devices allow greater precision while increasing procedure efficiency. Olympus’ new ESG-100 Bipolar Electrosurgical Generator, improved FlowerBasketV and TetraCatchV retrieval baskets and the NeedleCut3V needle knife are designed to meet unique demands for exceptional patient outcomes.

Olympus is debuting the newly released, easy-to-use ESG-100 Bipolar Electrosurgical Generator that incorporates Rapid Spark Technology™ and Versatile Coagulation Technology™ for outstanding and consistent performance. The simple interface has 14 different monopolar/bipolar modes including two PulseCut speeds and Olympus’ proprietary coagulation technology.

Olympus has also recently improved its stone management portfolio to include enhanced retrieval baskets and new needle knives.

Olympus’ advanced FlowerBasketV and TetraCatchV retrieval baskets feature siliconized smoothness for ease of capturing biliary stones. The eight-wire design is engineered to capture floating stones, while the four proximal wires facilitate the release of captured stones. With wireguided or rotatable models, precise stone removal is in your control.

The NeedleCut3V™ triple lumen needle knife featuring CleverCut coating is designed for a consistent 2 mm cutting length. The triple lumen construction with precurved and tapered tip also offers a radiopaque marker positioned at the sheath tip that facilitates smooth cannulation and provides clear tip visibility under fluoroscopy.

Increasing Efficiencies for Small Bowel Procedures: Small Intestinal Videoscope – Now with Narrow Band Imaging™ (NBI)
The newly launched "EnteroPro" brand consists of the Single Balloon Enteroscope (SBE) system, a broad range of EndoTherapy devices and Endo Capsule. Olympus is pleased to announce that the Olympus Small Bowel Intestinal Videoscope (SIF-Q180), a part of the new SBE system, is now commercially available with Olympus’ proprietary NBI technology.

The SBE system is designed to provide physicians with increased efficiencies for the examination and treatment of the small bowel while allowing physicians and hospitals to maintain high-quality patient care.

Enhancing Observation and Efficiency: EVIS EXERA II™ 180 Platform of Gastroscopes and Colonoscopes
The EVIS EXERA II 180 series is the world’s first endoscope platform to deliver both high-definition (HDTV) and Narrow Band Imaging™ (NBI) technologies, providing enhanced observation capabilities, as well as improved efficiency and patient turnaround time.

The pediatric PCF-H180AL/I high-definition video colonoscope is the newest offering in the innovative EVIS EXERA II™ universal platform. This addition to the popular, ultra-slim PCF endoscope series features a clear, sharp, high-definition image incorporated in a slender 11/7 mm diameter distal tip and an 11/8 mm diameter insertion tube. With 1080i lines of resolution, the PCF-H180AL/I takes advantage of the highest resolution currently available in the medical or consumer market as well as Olympus’ proprietary NBI.

Introducing the Aloka ProSound SSD-Alpha10 processor to the Endoscopic Ultrasound line up
The Aloka ProSound SSD-Alpha10 processor complements the current processor line-up. Compatible with Olympus’ curvilinear echoendoscopes used for EUS-guided FNA, the Alpha10 processor is also uniquely suited for the GF-UC140P-AL5 (2.8 mm channel), the GF-UCT140-AL5 (3.7 mm channel) and Olympus’ radial array echoendoscope, the GF-UE160-AL5. The exceptional image quality of the ProSound SSD-Alpha10 processor helps physicians better diagnose disease, leading to more personalized patient treatment.
